linocut beginnings

By

I remember the first time I tried linocut printing. It was in elementary school, fifth grade to be exact, and I carved a little lemming. I don’t remember why I choose a lemming, but I know I really enjoyed the process! And when I came across a linocut kit at the Art store, I decided to give it a try again. I pulled out an old sketch I did of a mountain, from 2020 when I was trying to complete a drawing every day. (I only made it 58 days… I think most of the drawings are farther back in the blog if you want to check them out) I thought it would be a relatively easy design to carve, and boy was I wrong! It took a couple weeks of carving, finding little bits of time to sit down and work on it in between work and family, but I think also part of why it took so long was because I thought it was going terribly. I wasn’t sure that I was making the right choices with what to carve, and what to leave. After a while I decided to just push through, it didn’t matter if it didn’t turn out perfect, it was my first attempt as an adult. After I decided I was done, I inked up the Lino, and pressed it onto some scrap craft paper that was laying around. I was nervous as I lifted the stamp (which I later realized, you usually lift the paper off of the block) but once I pulled it away, I was so excited! It worked! I had a cute little print of a mountain! Now emboldened by how well this went, I am excited to play more in the world of linocut, and have some fun ideas that I want to try!
